The presence of four “swan” hallmarks is disturbing on a jewel that is visibly made of yellow gold. A careful examination reveals, behind the swan, the tail feathers of the “owl” hallmark ! This is possible because the latter is slightly larger than the small-model “swan” hallmark, which was stamped over the “owl”—but why??? It remains a mystery that must have a specific explanation, as superimposing four hallmarks with such precision cannot not be wanted. To be continued…

Pair of boar-head cufflinks, signed “MELLERIO” and numbered. Each is composed of a boar’s head and a cartridge to the bullet in white gold and the cabochon-cut ruby primer in a bezel-set. Each piece is stamped with two “swan” hallmarks and the oval maker’s mark of Mellerio.
